So you have just bought a shiny copy of World of Warcraft and installed it. You have picked a server and created a character. Now you are questing and killing stuff in the newbie area and making some silver by selling everything to the vendors right? Stop right there! You can do better! These handful of tips work for any class you play.
Getting the Right Professions From the Start
Your first step is to get level 5 on your character by doing the quests in your newbie area. After that, head to the nearest big city in your area and pick up 2 out of the following 3 professions: Mining, Skinning, or Herbalism. Which ones do you pick? If you are using a Brian Kopp’s Questing guide, Zygor’s Leveling Guide or any other guide that involves heavy questing, I suggest taking Mining and Herbalism. If you are the type of player that will be doing straight grinding (killing enemies all the time) then I suggest Mining and Skinning. The reason for the switch is that skinning is great if you are killing lots of animals for experience but herbalism is faster for doing quests. As it stands now, it is much faster to level using a quest guide than it is to straight grind up levels.
With mining and herbalism, you can use the track ore and Track herbs button to see the mining nodes or herbalism nodes on your mini map. While you are out questing and killing, harvest as many of these nodes as possible. Regular copper ore sells very well on the auctionhouse in stacks of 20, usually around 1.5 gold a stack. The herbs don’t sell quite as well on the auctionhouse but as you get up in levels, you’ll harvest herbs that are more useful and will sell better. It is not uncommon for a 20 stack of Terocone or Mountain Silversage to go for 25 gold on the auctionhouse. With skinning, you’ll find that a stack of 20 light leather will go for about 50 silver. As you move up to medium leather and such, the price will go up to 1.5 gold a stack on average. Keep in mind though that it takes an extra 3 seconds to skin every animal you kill…which adds up when you are slaying tons of enemies over 70 levels. If you kill 200 animals a level till 70, you’ll spend an extra 10 hours just skinning them. Still it is more efficient if you are just grinding mobs to level.
Items that are Worth Money, but Every Newbie Vendors
Here are a list of items you should be selling on the auctionhouse instead of selling to vendors.
I just started a friend on World of Warcraft and following my tips, he had well over 55 gold at level 18. Considering you need 60 gold at level 40 for your mount, he is very much ahead of the game in terms of making money. Plus it is nice to have gold for training your skills and keeping your toon geared correctly for his level.
So there are some brief tips on making money in game. Nothing fancy but I will be willing to bet, you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you find out that following the advice above makes you wealthy as a newbie.
